social influence Flashcards
define social influence
when your behaviour is manipulated or changed by those around you
three types of conformity
compliance - to appear to agree with others whilst disagreeing in private
identification - to want to be perceived to belong
internalisation - to agree with others both in public and in private
define normative social influence
when we want to be liked by the majority - following the crowd to fit in with the ‘norm’ and be liked by the group
define informational social influence
occurs when we look to the majority group for information as we are unsure about the way to behave. A person will conform because they genuinely believe the majority to be right
what was the asch paradigm
- 123 male university students took part in a vision test that consisted of a line task
- this experiment measured the extent to which social pressure could make an individual conform
- a naïve person was placed in a room with 7 confederates
- 32% of the trials demonstrated conformity, 75% of the 123 participants conformed at least once
what was the anonymity trial in the asch paradigm
a naïve participant comes in late on purpose and didn’t say their answers out loud this decreased conformity
strengths of the asch paradigm
123 ppts is a relatively large sample size
lab experiment - could control variables
limitations of the asch paradigm
lacks population validity (all male, the 60’s/50’s, uni students and white american)
lacks temperal validity
lacks ecological validity - conducting in uni
some ppl may have figured out the demand characteristics therefore results are unreliable
what is a schema
a cognitive set of perceived rules or ideas we relate to a concept
what was zimbardo’s prison experiment?
- 21 male student volunteers who were selected as emotionally stable ppt
- randomly assigned role of prison guard or prisoner
- they were given uniforms and had to encompass their role
