Social Influence Flashcards
what is compliance
Lowest form of conformity where a person conforms publicly, but not privately, to be accepted by a group and avoid social rejection. Very short and is weak
What is identification
When a person conforms to be like a role model or a social role they admire. Changes attitude both privately and publicly.
What is internalisation
Deepest form of conformity. They conform privately and publicly, because they are persuaded that the attitudes of the majority are correct. Long lasting
Aim of Zimbardos experiment
To investigate if prison brutality happens because of the personality of guards and prisoners or because they are conforming to social roles
Conclusion from Zimardos experiment
Prison violence is caused by people conforming to social roles of prisoners and guards, because violence is seen when normal people are put in prisons
Ethical issues with Zimbardo’s experiment
Prisoners were exposed to physical and psychological harm. They also weren’t aware of what they were consenting to, this means they couldn’t give informed consent
Lack of Generalisability Zimbardo
Participants were mainly white middle class white men, however it has real world example as it could explain brutality in the real word
Zimbardo ecological validity
Lacks ecological validity as participants could have believed it wasn’t real so didnt act how they normally would act. However, 90% of conversation in the prison was about prison life suggesting they were taking it seriously
Bias in Zimbardos experiemnt
Bias as Zimbardo played the prison warden. Creates investigator affects. Made participants behave worse since Zimbardo was around
Variables affecting conformity
-Group size
-Task difficulty
-Unanimity
