What is kohlberg’s stages in development
Cognitive-developmental theory of gender based on the idea of a childs understanding of behaviour, which becomes more sophisticated with age. But link is not with age it comes as a result of biological maturation. Understanding of gender runs parallel to intellectual development as child matures biologically. Gender development thought to process through 3 stages. Ages suggested reflect the fact the transition from stage to stage is gradual.
Outline the first stage of gender development
Stage 1 of kohlberg’s theory is gender identity (Age 2). Proposed children are able to recognise themselves as boy or girl and at age 3 able to label others as such. Understanding of gender tends not to stretch beyond simple labelling. Children of this age group do not view gender as fixed.
Outline the second stage of gender development
Stage 2 of Kohlberg’s theory is gender stability (Age 4). Child understands their own gender is fixed, however cannot apply this logic to others. May describe a man with long hair as a woman also believe people change gender if they engage in activities associated with the other gender.
Outline the third stage of gender development
stage 3 of Kohlberg’s theory is gender constancy (Age 6-7). Child realises that gender remains the same over time and situations. Begin to identify with of their own gender and start to behave in stereotypically gender-appropriate ways.
