What is conformity ?
Changes in an individuals behaviour and beliefs due to a real or imagined group pressure
Compliance
Superficial and least permenant
Publicly changes beliefs and behaviours to fit in but reverts back in private
Identification
Possible private and public acceptance
Individuals look for a group for guidance
Temporary change
Lasts only when you are part of that group
Internalisation
Deepest most permanent
Individuals publicly and privately change behaviours and beliefs
Accepted into there cognitions
What is ISI
Drive by desire to be right
Individual is unsure about something they confirm by seeking info and assume it’s right

If size of majority group increases , conformity rates increase
When there were 3 confederates and 1 participant conformity increased by 32%
This platued after
Size of majority does have an effect on conformity but to a point
Unanimity
Complete agreement
Ash made one confederate give the correct answer conformity dropped to 5.5%
Lone confederate conformity dropped to 9%
When dissenter (diffrent ) breaks unanimity conformity decreases
Task difficulty
Conformity increased when task difficulty increases
Asch made standard line and comparison line similar in length
When difficult if task increases conformity increases
Right answer is less obvious
