Tajfel
Says we get our self-esteem from the group’s we belong to
Group membership by itself is enough to create prejudice
3 Components
Social Categorisation - Seeing yourself as part of a group
Social Identification - Adopting values and behaviour of the ingroup
Social Comparison - Viewing your ingroup as superior to others
SODA
S - Supported by Tajfels (1970) minimal group study. Found that boys would always favour the ingroup over the outgroup, without even knowing who the ingroup was
O - Minimal Group Study (1970) is said to lack ecological validity. Tajfel says if boys are willing to favour the ingroup in such a meaningless task then they are more likely to do so IRL situations. Also boys are often competitive, and Demand Characteristics (PPTS. do something because they think the experimenter wants them to) take a role, might’ve thought experimenter wanted them to win
D - Opposite to RCT. RCT says prejudice arises form competition of group’s, backed by Robbers Cave & also has more ecological validity
A - Encouraging ppl to see themselves as part of a larger social identity can combat prejudice. Some think teaching ‘Britishness’ in schools would do this, yet it can also backfire as ppl could be prejudice towards those who are ‘unbritish’
Tajfel’s Minimal Group Study
APFC
A - Investigate whether the existence of groups caused prejudice
P - Bristol schoolboys aged 14-15. Divided them into random groups, but they ere told it was due to something such as preference in art.
F - Boys allocated points to their ingroup much more than the outgroup
C - Outgroup discrimination is easily triggered just by existence. Prejudice arises from the existence of ingroups and outgroups
