Q

APFC

A

A - To see if Milgram’s study was era-bound and if the same results could be reached with modern Ppts.

P - 70 Ppts. Screened all and dropped those who knew of Milgrams experiment, had attended more than 2 psychology classes or had drug issues. Replication of Milgrams Study #5 (Heart condition). Resembles Milgram’s but test shock given to ‘trick’ teacher is only 15V instead of 45V. Shocks given in 15V increments for incorrect answers. ‘Learner’ states he has a slight heart condition. Experiment is stopped once 165V is about to be reached. Much more ethical than Milgram’s (screening, stopped early, extensive debrief)

F - 70% prepared to go past 150V compared to 82.5% in Milgram’s Variation #5. Not much difference considering quite small sample size.

C - Milgram’s conclusions still stand 50 years later. We will still often show obedience to a perceived authority figures even if it conflicts with moral compass.

Q

GRAVE

A

G - Sample of 70 is larger than Milgram’s 40, yet over all of Milgrams experiments there were far more Ppts. Larger range of ages 20-81, compared to 25-50

R - Inter-Rater reliability as was all filmed. Milgram’s original studies were reliable as they were easily repeatable.

A - Can be applied to real life situations where obedience is necessary e.b. schools, work. Authority figures should wear symbols of authority (uniform) and justify their authority with reference to a greater good.

V - Lack of ecological validity as delivering shocks is such an unusual task. Milgram argued that evens such as the Holocaust were also extremely unusual, these things do occur. Burgers stopping of the study at 150V reduces validity as it is a huge assumption to say these people would go to 450V

E - Burger believes his study was far more ethical than Milgram’s. There was extensive screening and debriefing, and a panel of Ethics was also present during the study. Initial shock of 15V and stopping at 150V both reduce stress and trauma. However, there was still deception of Ppts.
