Tajfel’s SIT states we identify with an ingroup. Society comes as a large ingroup, thus we may categorise and identify with our society

RCT highlights the issue of competition in prejudice. Competing for limited resources results in prejudice

Intolerance
In some countries the outward expression of prejudice may be accepted or encouraged e.g. apartheid south Africa

Fairness
Some countries more concerned with fairness. Wetherell (1982) replicated tajfel’s minimal group experiment in an NZ school. Polynesian children much more generous in their allocation than the white NZ children

S - Akrami (2009). Some ppts. heard a confederate say ‘nobody can argue that sexism is still an issue in Sweden’. Ppts. who head this expressed much less mean sexism than those who did not

  • Ideas about combating prejudice. Esses (2001) suggest targeting the zero-sum beliefs that lead to prejudice.

W - Akrami also noted that personality, such as RWA and SDO, also played a role
