social identity theory is
the identifcation of the self based off memberships in different social groups
3 stages
stage 1: catagorisation- “i am a…” the acknolegement of groups
stage 2: identification- “i am like… because i am a…” the assignment of traits based on groups
stage 3: comparison- “because they do this… they are like…” assigning traits onto other groups
in and out group bias
Ingroup bias: the application of positive traits to your in group due to a positive perception
Out group bias: the application of negative traits to an out group due to a negative perception
hetero/homo geneity effects
Homogeneity effect: the viewing of an out group as a hermononous group
Heterogeneity effect: the ability to recognise differences and variety inside an in group
minimal group paradigm
Minimal group paradigm: the claiming of an ingroup biased on trivial criterion
