SCT Bandura, Ross, Ross' (1961) Flashcards
date and name (Bandura Ross Ross 1961)
Bandura, Ross Ross 1961
aim (Bandura Ross Ross 1961)
to investigate if childern would immitate aggressive models
partisipants (Bandura Ross Ross 1961)
72, 3-7 year old childern, preschool at stanford univestity
24 controll group
24 with nonaggressive model
12 with female model (6/6 gender split)
12 with male model (6/6 gender split)
24 with aggressive model
ect.
method (Bandura Ross Ross 1961)
- matched pairs
- in a room for 10 minutes watching either an aggressive model (hitting bobo doll and yelling at it) or a nonaggressive model (plays with toys)
- aggression arousal: sent to a room with nice toys and angered the child by moving the child after they started enjoying playing (avg 2 min)
- 20 minutes in room with less nice toys and aggressive toys (data taken by other model who didn’t know if the child had been exposed to aggression)
results (Bandura Ross Ross 1961)
- boys were more aggressive than girls
- aggressive actions were more likely to be replicated by the same sex
- watching the aggressive model made the childern more aggressive
conclution (Bandura Ross Ross 1961)
Childern learnt aggression by observing and replicating the actions of models with a higher tendancy to copy a same sex model
relation to SCT (Bandura Ross Ross 1961)
Attention: the participants were forced to watch either a violent or non violent model
Retention: the participants where put back in the room in 30 minutes so that the memory was fresh
Reproduction: the participants were physically able to replicate the aggressive behavior
Motivation: the participants were angered and were motivated to display their anger
Reinforcement: the childern felt internal relief
How does this support SCT? It shows that childern will mimmic models without trial and error by going through the 5 stages.
weaknesses of Bandura Ross Ross 1961
sample comes from the same backgroud and cant be generalised to larger populations,
using physical aggression as the base for aggressive replication (favours male aggression)
strenths of Bandura Ross Ross 1961
an even split of females and males when investigating the effects of sex based aggression,
Use of the same models and location of toys (keeps variables controlled)
