What is an ingroup?
social group commanding members’ esteem & loyalty
an exclusive, typically small, group of people with a shared interest or identity.
What is an outgroup?
social group toward which one feels some opposition
people outside one’s own group, especially as considered to be inferior or alien; a group perceived as other than one’s own.
What is a secondary group?
Large, impersonal
pursue a goal or activity
often short term

Dyad, Triad
What is a Dyad?
2 member group
Very intimate, but unstable
What is a Triad
3 member group
More stable, more types of interaction possible
What happens as groups grow in size?
Less intimate but more stable
Leaders emerge
What are 2 role styles?
Instrumental, Expressive
What is an instrumental role?
Task oriented
What is an expressive role?
Collective well-being oriented
3 decision-making styles: (ADL)
- Authoritarian: The leader makes decisions
- Democratic: Member involvement
- Laissez-faire: lets group function on its own
