For some individuals functioning on their own is not possible
Deprivation and independence
. Some children are forced to work young
. Some are forced to help with childcare
Giving a child responsibility increases their independence
Stage of development
If you are not emotionally or socially mature you can’t be independent in a safe and productive way
Independence in Infancy
An infant is highly dependant upon their parent
Independence in early childhood
Children try to branch out and learn independence but need their parents supervision
Independence in Adolescence
Try to assert their independence and reject parental control.
Still rely upon parents when things go wrong.
Independence in early adulthood
Are indispensably from parents but still often make mistakes.
Rely upon friends for guidance
Independence in middle adulthood
Fully independent and often aiding children in gaining their own independence.
Rely upon romantic partner when struggling.
Independence in later adulthood
Slowly loose independence as a decrease in physical and mental abilities cause dependence
