Social Control Flashcards
Informal Social Control
Subtle controls of or behaviour.
Formal Social Control
Institutions with power directly and explicitly controlling behaviour.
Goffman
Total institutions like prisons, hospitals, barracks and boarding schools regiment all parts of life so they’re stripped of individuality, norms and values. People in total institutions for too long become institutionalised and cannot handle life outside.
McRobbie and Garber
Bedroom culture, girls are sanctioned more heavily and kept indoors for safety. Whereas, boys are given more freedom to be adventurous.
Renold
Boys are willing to hide their academic success to be accepted. Being ‘cool’ consists of being good as sports but not so good in the classroom so boys hide success to avoid teasing.
MacPherson Report
Murder of Stephen Lawrence, the police were institutionally racist as the police don’t apply the same standards to all citizens. Black youths are still 7x more likely to be stopped and searched than white counterparts.
