what is social control

A
  • Social control is when individual or group behaviour is regulated so they comply with the social norms and structures, can be seen as controlling and conditioning people against their own will into behaviour patterns wouldn’t necessarily choose.

involves using psych understanding to control people, often for the good of society

the belief that person has formal right to make demands and expects others to be complaint – ‘ legitimate authority’ e.g. doctors, mental health hospital, eating disorder clinic staff, probation officers

if someone has high level of skills and knowledge, patients likely to trust the suggested treatment, e.g. accept drug treatment despite side effects
