what is social control
- Social control is when individual or group behaviour is regulated so they comply with the social norms and structures, can be seen as controlling and conditioning people against their own will into behaviour patterns wouldn’t necessarily choose.
involves using psych understanding to control people, often for the good of society
why is it benefical
- Can be beneficial- if we can modify individuals behaviour they can become a productive member of society
what is negative social control
gative social control which can be shown by disapproval, punishment/ treat of punishment
what is positive social control
- Positive social control which is shown through rewards and approval
what is coercive power
belief that a person can punish others for non- complianc
what is legitimate power
the belief that person has formal right to make demands and expects others to be complaint – ‘ legitimate authority’ e.g. doctors, mental health hospital, eating disorder clinic staff, probation officers
what is expert power
if someone has high level of skills and knowledge, patients likely to trust the suggested treatment, e.g. accept drug treatment despite side effects
what is reward power
the person has the ability to compensate- reward- another person for their compliance- TEP…
