Social Construction
The practice of having more than one wife or husband at the same time.
Polygamy
Where a husband has more than one wife.
Polygyny
Where a woman has more than one husband.
Polyandry
The legally authorized killing of someone as punishment for a crime.
Capital Punishment
The conviction and punishment of a person for crime that they had not committed.
Miscarriage of Justice
Being tried twice for the same crime.
Double Jeopardy
A partial defence for murder where a defendant can show that their mental conditions substantially reduced their ability to understan what they were doing/form a rational judgement.
Diminished Responsibility
An unlawful killing, without malice, or afore thought and in circumstances where it is not murder.
Manslaughter
A defence in law allowing the use of reasonable force to avoid a conviction.
Self Defence
A defence in court where the defendant is not in charge if their actions, but the defendant must have conciously chosen to commit crime.
Automatism
An offence in the UK - being married to more than one person at the same time. Punishable by up to 7 years in prison in prison/fine/both.
Bigamy
When the laws are relaxed so that punishments for a particular act are much less severe.
Decriminalisation
When a law is passed to make a particular act no longer a crime.
