Defining culture
According to ken brown 20150 culture refers to the language, beliefs, values, norms, customs, dress, diet, roles, knowledge and skills and all the other things people learn that make up a way of life in any society.
Material culture
Refers to the physical things that people creat end attach meaning to. A family, home, cars, clothing, and food may mean alot to people within different cultures. The wearing of certain items to a football match means more to some fans, rather than protecting the body from cold.
Non material culture
Refers to ideas that people share, for example their rules, traditions, language, and history. This helps Poeple understand their society and gives them rules on how to behave
Norms
Are expected behaviours in different contexts, such as classrooms, cinemas, restaurants, and aeroplanes, they are a part of peoples culture.
Values
Refers to what is considered worthwhile and worth working for in society. Values are what we find important, such as wealth and health in a western society.
How do we learn culture
Through socialisation- where we learn our norms and values also.
Social construct
Refers to an idea or concept created by society.
Culture as a social construct
Means that culture as a social construct is created, maintained, and transformed by people through social interactions rather than being biologically determined.
Collectivist culture
Tend to emphasize belonging to the group as more important then personal gain and freedom. HOFSTEDE insight found that china is a collectivist culture. The Chinese groups take care of each other in exchange for loyalty.
Individualist culture
These are cultures which tend to emphasize individual freedom and personal gain, sometimes at the expense of others. HOFSTEDE insight found that the UK tend to be a highly individualistic culture.
Cultural diversity
Cultural diversity proves that culture is a social construct. Cultural diversity is evidence of the nurture debate. Norms, values, and customs vary considerable between different cultures. They changed over time , between groups within a society and countries. For example st David’s day in Wales which is celebrated on the 1st march. Traditional meal is cawl
