Social conflict and resolution: Part 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Name 2 species that will not experience less aggression when removing androgens
A
praire voles and beta fish
2
Q
Describe the sneaking behavior in frogs
A
- Satellite behavior: alternative sneaking strategy
Female frog lured in by male, another male will take their place to reproduce
3
Q
Describe the sneaking behavior seen in fish
A
Type I males are larger, build nests, and produce vocalizations to attract females. Type II males are smaller, do not build nests, and instead use a “sneaker” strategy, sneaking into Type I males’ nests to fertilize eggs. This allows Type II males to reproduce without the need for the resources and energy required to build and defend a nest.
4
Q
Protogynous hermaphroditism
A
- common strategy for reproductive success
- female changes to male (ovarian tissue changes to testicular tissue)
- as male size increases, success increases
- favored when it is best to be small female and large male reproducing
5
Q
Protandrous hermaphroditism
A
- less common strategy for reproductive success
- male changes to female
- large male typically less advantageous, less success than protogynous hermaphroditism
6
Q
Example of protandrous hermaphroditism
A
- clownfish
- Male and females form mating pair, no competition for mates
- Then competition no longer needed, change to female (producing more eggs as larger female)
- this show plasticity in organisms
