Social Cognition Flashcards
Computer Metaphor vs. Embodied Cognition
Computer metaphor: the human mind functions just like a computer, with input, output, and a set of computations in between
Embodied cognition: sensory and motor systems are seen as fundamentally integrated with cognitive processing
Neural Networks
Neurons store and process information – they act as both hard drives and processors; information is stored and processed across networks of interconnected neurons
Availability Heuristic
Estimating the probability of an event based on the ease with which relevant instances come to mind; Hot water is more likely to kill you than a plane crash
Representativeness Heuristic
estimating the likelihood of an event by comparing it to an existing prototype that already exists in our minds
Conjunction Fallacy
a fallacy or error in decision-making where people judge that a conjunction of two possible events is more likely than one or both of the conjuncts
Automatic cognition
Occurs across the brain and automatically unfolds
Controlled cognition
requires the activation of executive regions of the brain to control process in the rest of the brain
Two modes of thought
controlled cognition (deliberate and slow) and automatic cognition (automatic and fast)
Executive Network
performs high-level cognitive tasks, and works alongside or in anti-correlation with the other six main brain networks
Heuristics and confirmation bias
people will tend to pick the vowel card (A) and the positive number card (4), but the correct answer in the vowel card (a) and the odd card (7)
