Social class/ Wealth Flashcards
Police man
could be said that Mrs J and Mr Lyons receive different treatment due to their social class, the police officer also warns the Lyons’ to keep Edward away from the ‘likes of them’.
Mrs Johnstone’s desperation
It seems that other characters frequently use Mrs Johnstone’s financial status and social class against her to bully her into doing things or strike fear into her throughout the entirety of the play as they know she’s struggling to support herself and her children.
Sammy
Sammy is a clear demonstration of the extreme effects of social class, eventually he commits a murder. His level of crime increases from playing with toy guns to planning a robbery and severely injuring someone with a real gun. This could be due to lack of opportunity - he’s kicked out of education and in turn can’t get a job.
Mickey VS Edward
The twins are biologically the same their lives are extremely different purely as a result of the opportunities they’ve been offered throughout their lives - a s a result of their social statuses.
Money = power
In the play the more money you have the more power you have power your future, demonstrated in Mr Lyons’ inability to sympathise with the lower class people he fires with little consideration and they way that this decision affects other characters, leaving them in tears or desperate for employment.
