Fate Flashcards
Mrs J introduces superstition by telling Mrs L to take her shoes of the table = BAD LUCK
Later Mrs L uses Mrs J’s fear of superstition to convince her that if the twins find out their identity, both will die. In order to prevent her form backing out of the deal or going yo the police.
Mrs L starts to believe in superstitions when Edward takes long to return home, blaming the children he plays with for “drawing him away from me”
Mr Lyons puts Edwards shoes on the table, Mrs. Lyons reacts with fright, sweeping the shoes off the table. As she does so, the Narrator enters, again listing his various bad omens, and adding that the devil is coming for Mrs. Lyons.
Sammy and toy guys
- Stealing Mickey’s toy gun
- Threatening a bus driver with a knife
- Involving Mickey in a robbery where he shoots someone who we presume dies after - due to a ‘pool’ of blood
The narrator
Every time the narrator appears in the play he brins bad news, usually relating to the twins and reminding the audience of their inevitable fate mentioned in the intro. This seem to be approaching which is suggested in the progression of this ‘devil’ its at first ‘got your number’ and towards the end its ‘right behind ya’.
Blood brothers
When the twins cut their fingers and become blood brothers it could allude to them finding out their true identity and eventually dying at the end of the play.
The prologue
The prologue tells the audience that the twins will eventually die, so throughout the play the audience is almost looking for signs of when this will happen. This also means that when watching the play and seeing relationships form we know that they wont last, this is paired with the constant reminders from the narrator in various forms.
Fate repeatedly brings the twins together
Every time Mrs Lyons tries to separate the twins they find a war to meet again, when they move to the countryside Mrs J is all of a sudden relocated to the same area. When she fires Mrs J so that she wont see Edwards anymore the boys meet and start a friendship anyway.
Effect of believing in fate
At first Mrs Lyons didn’t believe the idea of fate or superstitions until Mrs Johnstone introduces her to them, this causes her to become extremely paranoid and eventually drive herself to insanity, she becomes extremely unstable.
Also happens to Edward - after Mickey tells hi that one magpie means “sorrow” - Edwards feels sad when he sees one a second time.
