High brow taste m/c have higher cultural capital (experiences, attitudes and values complements what they learn at school) e.g visiting museum/theatres
Low brow taste w/c are limited in experiences which affects their knowledge and aspirations

Value systems:
Deferred gratification (m/c work hard now and make sacrifices to seek better reward in prospects and education long term)
Immediate gratification w/c more likely to drop out and get jobs which rewards happen now

M/c more likely to check on children’s progress attend parents evening
Criticsm of Douglas
W/c parents not less interested. Nature of job means they are unable to take time off.
Also uncomfortable interacting with teachers
Sugarman
W/c subculture. Barrier to achievement
Fatalism: state of mind where someone believes there is nothing they can do to alter their situation or circumstances
Collectivism: valuing being part of group more than succeeding as an individual.
Material deprivation
Material deprivation - lack of psychical necessities
Rowntree - w/c low income (poor housing, clothing resources) 1/10 children live in relative deprivation
Ethnic minorities twice likely to be unemployed
Douglas standard of living is poor = health problems leading to absence at school
Examples of material deprivation
Poor standard of living / diet
Lack of money for equipment tutor trips (exclusion)
Part time work by students
