Social Class Flashcards
M B: “P I o t w y t h a o f o f, a t I s h f f.”
Mr Birling: “Perhaps I ought to warn you that he’s an old friend of mine, and that j see him fairly frequently.”
Mr Birling isn’t afraid to use his standing to try and intimidate people.
M B: “A g o t s.”
Mrs Birling: “A girl ofthat sort.”
Mrs Birling embodies the ‘us and them’ mentality that surrounded society at that time.
M B: “W w s h y g t, y’k, a t k c.”
Mr Birling: “Well we’ve several hundred young women there, y’know, and they keep changing.”
Mr Birling doesn’t bother to get to know the people who work for him as they are below him. His speech here reminds the audience of his humble background.
I G: “y u t p y h […] t p t g.”
Inspector Goole: “you used the power you had […] to punish the girl.”
Sheila also isn’t afraid of using her social standing to her own ends.
M B: “y k o c t m h w L M o t y”
Mrs Birling: “You know of course that my husband was Lord Mayor only two years ago”
Mrs Birling is well aware that she is powerless as a woman but can use her marriage to intimidate people.
M B: “(R) A, y n s t s s t.”
Mrs Birling: “(Reproachfully) Arthur, you’re not supposed to say such things.”
Mrs Birling is her husband’s social superior - DON’T FORGET THIS.
