Gerald Croft Flashcards
“R t m t b a d b v m t e w-b y m-a-t.”
“Rather too manly to be a dandy but very much the easy well-bred man-about-town.”
Priestly’s first description of Gerald.
“I w a b a t w a t t.”
“I was awfully busy at the works all that time.”
Foreshadowing his affair with Eva - he tries to play down his long term absence.
“I h I c m y a h a y d t b.”
“I hope I can make you as happy as you deserve to be.”
He is either very affectionate or making up for something…
“I k w h d t s t.”
“I know we’d have done the same thing.”
He sides with Mr Birling in the dispute about him firing Eva. He clearly knows where the money is and isn’t afraid to disregard Sheila when he has to.
“W c k t f h.”
“We can keep things from him.”
Gerald thinks he can out-wit the Inspector.
“S l y a f a c.”
“She looked young and fresh and charming.”
He is very shallow about his feelings towards Eva.
“I d i h t s t I c m l t h.”
“I didn’t install her there so that I could make love to her.”
Perhaps he really did love her? It certainly feels more genuine than the exploits of Eric.
“I b a o t m i p i h l.”
“I became at once the most important person in her life.”
Perhaps he is just cocky or maybe he was well aware that he meant an awful lot to her - in which case we are forced to consider what kind of person would desert her in that position.
“E a r n.”
“Everything’s all right now.”
He shows no remorse and slips back into his old habits. He represents Priestly’s fear that the old money will stick to their ways.
“I d f a h a s f a m.”
“I didn’t feel about her as she felt about me.”
Perhaps Gerald only ever intended to look after her short term - in which case one must questions why he introduced her to a different life if he intended to take it away from the off.
