social change 51-64 Flashcards
Establishment
Class loyalties remained strong in 1950s as the establishment involved the aristocracy, leading politicians, diplomats, top civil servants and more. but by 1960 British was becoming a less conformist society with people being prepared to question the establishment.
culture and criticism
Magazines, writers and TV such as Private Eye, Angry Young Men and That Was The Week That Was all sparked controversy by attacking the attitudes and behaviours of the upper class. the writing was bitter and sarcastic.
changing culture/taboo and censorship
TV such as sapphire was a crime thriller that included racial tensions, sec and violence. Lady Chatterys Lover in 1962 even led to a court case under the terms of the obstinacy act, it was published with 2 million copies. Culture was changing fast and many people did not like it.
women
1950 = women were seen as wives, mothers and housewives, average age for a woman to wed was 21. only 20% of women worked and bank accounts/mortgage were all set in the man’s name.
1960 = trade unions emerged to support working women in order for the pay gap to shrink - even had equal pay in teaching. home improvement devices such as dishwasher, washing machine and a fridge rose to 54%.
immigration
1949 wind rush was the first immigrants from the Caribbean with 492 people on board. by 1958 Britain had 210,000 commonwealth immigrants.
attitudes towards immigration
there were mixed attitudes towards the immigrants as many faced violence and racism, one of the main accidents was Notting Hill where there were riots due to the bad quality hosing they revived. The government was keen to ease tensions as immigrants were valuable to the work force e.g cheap labour, yet they were slow to act and had little support such as the commonwealth act in 1962
