Social Change:
The alteration, modification or transformation of public policy,
culture or social institutions over time
Collective Behaviour:
Involves a relatively large number of people who mutually engage with, transcend, bypass or subvert established institutional patterns, structures and norms
Types of Collective behavior:
Crowds, Disaster behavior, fads/fashion, panics/crazes, rumors/gossip, public opinions.
Social Movement
Organized groups that act purposefully to promote (or resist) change through collective action
Major sources of social change:
Population/urbanization, youth, physical environment, Science/tech, Inequality,
Resistance to social change:
Vested interest:a personal stake or involvement in an undertaking or state of affairs, especially one with an expectation of financial gain.
Strategies for Resistance:
- Ridicule
- Co-optation
- Formal social control
- Random violence
Claims Making:
the process of trying to con-vince the public and public officials of the importance of joining a social movement to address a particular issu
