social and dispositional factors affecting bystander intervention Flashcards
Dispositional factors affecting bystander intervention?
Similarity to victim
expertise
social factors affecting bystander intervention?
Diffusion of responsibility
reaction of others
cost of helping
how does ‘similarity to victim’ affect bystander intervention?
If bystander is more like victim they are more likely to feel empathy towards them.
How does ‘expertise’ affect bystander intervention?
If you have the expertise you are more likely to help as you know you can.
How does ‘diffusion of responsibility affect bystander intervention?
The more people there are the less likely we are to help because we feel we aren’t the only ones responsible.
How does ‘reaction of others’ affect bystander intervention?
We don’t want to overreact so we don’t look foolish in front of others.
How does the ‘cost of helping’ affect bystander intervention?
We weigh up cost benefits, whether it will take our time and resources to help.
Strength of presence of others
SMOKE IN THE ROOM study showed that when there were others they reacted the same way the other people in the room reacted. (supporting evidence)
Weakness of presence of others
It’s not a real-life situation as most of the people in the room were actors (conformers) - there was a study done in a real-life situation that showed people were helpful when there were a lot of people around.
