Expectation (Factor affecting perceptual set) Flashcards
expectations
belief about what will happen based on past experiences
Aim: Burner and Minturn
to investigate how expectations can inform our perceptions
Method: Burner and Minturn
(24 ppts) letters or numbers were flashed up on a screen at first quicker than the eye could see and then it decreases 20 milliseconds at a time. Group A was shown numbers and then test stimulus B and then they were shown letters and then test stimulus B. Group A did the same thing but counterbalanced (repeated measures)
Results: Burner and Minturn
The ppts who had been shown numbers drew the figure as 13 and those shown letters wrote the figure as B.
Evaluations: explains the errors people make in the real world
As Gregory argues we come up with a hypothesis on what we are seeing. This means that context and expectations are very important in making decisions in the real world. Furthermore, it challenges Gibson’s theory that the same perceptual rules apply in every situation.
Evaluations: Exp used volunteer sampling
As ppts were keen and enthusiatic
