Culture ( factor effecting perceptual set) Flashcards
perceptual set
The tendency of the brain to notice or prefer aspects of the sensory environment.
culture
beliefs and expectations that surround us
Hudsons aim
To find out if people from different cultures interpreted information from pictures differently
Hudsons: Method
He showed the ppts an image with an elephant an antelope and a man. They were asked wether the antelope or the man was closer. (the antelope was closer)
Hudsons: Results
The ppts that were unschooled and had not seen many 2D images said the elephant was closer and the ones that were educated said the correct answer that the antelope was closer.
Hudson’s: Conclusion
His results showed that some aspects of perception are learned and that culture may affect perception
Another example of how culture affects perception
A child from a western society draws an elephant the ‘normal’ way and a child from a tribal society draws an elephant lying down on their stomach with their legs and tail sticking out
Evaluation: language barriers (weakness)
One weakness with cross-cultural research is that researchers may encounter language barriers. This means that there could have been a miscommunication between the researcher and ppts causing the procedure to be changed and therefore the results might not be telling us what we think they are telling us.
Evaluation: Evidence taken from a long time ago
The evidence to support the theory was taken 50 years ago. Back then they didn’t use control groups to support their theory meaning there might not be such a large difference in western and non-western experiences.
