Social Flashcards
social psych
The scientific investigation of how people think about, interact with, influence and are
influenced by the thoughts feelings and behaviours of others.
Social Influence:
+ 2 types
The ways in which people later their behaviour or attitudes because of the direct or indirect
Influence of others
Social Facilitation: a boost in performance due to presence of others
Social Inhibition: a decrease in performance due to presence of others
Social Facilitation and Inhibition Evidence
Ingham (1974) blind tug of war, individuals decrease their efforts due to loss of motivation and increased sense of anonymity
Triplett (1988) social facilitation (principal arousal) —> cyclists perform better together, children work better in presence of others.
Group
collection of 2 or more people who interact with and influence one another and share a common purpose
Group Polarisation
phenomena where group attitudes/beliefs become stronger ie more positive/more negative in presence of like minded people or absence of dissenting views. “group think”
Group Polarisation Evidence
Myer & Bishiop (1970): when students who are lower in racial prejudice discuss racial issues they become more accepting but also opposite as highly prejudiced people become more prejudice.
Conformity
Ash
Tendency to adjust ones thoughts, feelings or behaviours in ways that are in agreement with those of a particular individual or group
Factors affecting conformity:
Group size: increased with group size until it reaches 4
Unanimity: complete agreement effect
Informational influence; need for directions (feels incompetent)
Normative influence; guided by 1 or more social norms
Culture
Conformity Evidence
Line Task:
using line task naive participant put in a room with 7
confederates with planned responses. real participant sat at the end and was last to answer. 18 trials and confederates answered wrong 12 times. Also had controlled condition where only real participants.
Conformity Results
1/3 (32%) conformed with clearly incorrect majority on critical trials over 12 trials.
75% conformed once, 25% never conformed
In controlled condition only 1% gave wrong answer.
2 Conclusions of Conformity
Normative Influence: wants to fit in with group ie following norms at new school
Informational Influence: believes the group is better informed than they are ie new countries footy match.
