Describe the Red River Rebellion. (Include years, leaders occurrences and what to Riel.)

A

-The Canadian government planned to take over Rupert’s Land 1869 (West)
-The Metis decided to stop the takeover, until at least they could discuss their inclusion into Canada/. They wanted title to the lands they farmed and their rights to keep catholic schools, to speak French, and to form a provincial government (Manitoba)
-Under the leadership of Riel –> the Metis stormed Upper Fort Garry in November and set up a provincial government
an English man Thomas Scott was given trail and found guilty of treason and shot (this angered English Canada)
-The Canadian Government decided to listen to their requests and granted most of the Metis demands and a new province entered Confederation in 1870 –> Manitoba –> Riel fled to the US

A

-The Metis felt once again “pushed aside” by the Canadian government so they asked Riel to come back
-A rebellion brought out, the government sent the Northwest Mountain Police who crushed the rebellion
-Riel was captured and tried for treason and found guilt –> hung

A

in the 1960s the terrorist separatist group known as FLQ (Front de Liberation du Quebec) used guerilla warfare tactics (learned in Cuba) and used them to bomb armories. railway stations and government buildings

Describe the October Crisis

A

-FLQ kidnapped James Cross (British Trade Commissioner) and Pierre Laporte (Provencal Minister)
–> PM Trudeau enacted War Measures Act (an act used in crisis, taking away all civil liberties)
-the crisis was dealt with –> 400 arrested, 23 were convicted and went to jail for acts of terrorism
-Cross was released, Laporte killed

A

many were upset with Quebec’s special status, First Nations, Inuit, Metis felt they should get recognition, and be present at negotiations

A

tried to be too many things to too many people –> 6 provinces voted no –> some were frustrated with special interest groups demanding recognition and some did not like politicians working on the Accord.
