    - differences in brain structures
  2. Learning processes
    - conditioning: modification of behavior by learning thru association and/or reinforcement
  3. courtship disorders
    - normal courtship behavior is a 4-stage process
    - stage 1 of normal behavior = location and evaluation
  4. may represent a sexual escape route
    - some people may become paraphiliacs due to blockage of normal avenues of sexual expression
    - not a conclusive theory
  5. cycle of abuse
    - cycle in which abused children grow up to repeat similar forms of abuse on others
  6. Influence of other traits
    - Hypersexuality: excess of sexual desire that shows itself in compulsive masturbation and the devotion of a great deal of time to sexual fantasy, pornography use, and the pursuit of sex partners
    - OCD, ADHD, etc.

A
  1. behavioral treatments
    - aversion therapy: eliminate unwanted desires by associating them w/ something that was previously experienced as attractive
    - masturbatory reconditioning: changing sexual attraction by switching fantasy as soon as orgasm is approaching
    *does not rely on aversion therapy, less likely to instill guilt
  2. psychological treatments
    - cognitive therapy: attempts to correct paraphiliac’s way of thinking; removes blockages to normal sexual expression (work on building social skills)
    - relapse prevention theory: learning to cope with situations (Practical training, like avoiding locations that offer temptations to offend and committing to jobs or hobbies)
    - good lives model: collection of skills and knowledge that enable him to attain “primary human goods” (life, health, knowledge, excellence in work/play, autonomy, etc.)
    - COSA (circles of support and accountability)
  3. drug treatments
    - drugs used to decrease sexual desires
    - SSRIs (antidepressants) - used to decrease sexual behavior
  4. Castration
    - removal of the testicles, treatment of last resort
