Deviance
any behavior, practice, belief, or condition that results in disapproval, hostility, or sanction
Pluralistic Society
Made up of many different groups with different norms and values, which may or may not change over time
criminal deviance
Serious forms of deviance that violate established laws
deviance of the power
Powerful people can do the same behavior (or worse) than ordinary citizens but often escape punishment
Functionalism
This perspective posits that deviance is an abnormality to eliminate, but a certain amount is functional.
Contributes to social solidarity by enhancing the sense of what is right and wrong
Strain Theory 1
When a gap exists between cultural goals for success and means available to achieve those goals, rates of deviance will be high.

Social Conflict theory
things like race and gender.
Various segments of the population have conflicting interests some things are deviant one culture may not be in another
: Dominant class interests determine what is labeled deviant or criminal.
Primary Deviance
Occurs at the moment an activity is labeled as deviant by others
Secondary Deviance
: Occurs when a person labeled deviant accepts the label as part of his or her identity and begins to act in conformity with the label
differential association theory
Deviant and criminal behavior results from associating with people with attitudes favorable to deviant or criminal behavior
Informal social Control
Unofficial means of sanctioning deviance in everyday interactions
Formal Social Control
Attempts to officially sanction certain behaviors and visibly punish others
