SOC 02 - Conformity types and explanations Flashcards
1
Q
What are the different types of conformity?
A
- Compliance
- Identification
- Internalisation
2
Q
What is compliance?
A
- Compliance is the most superficial type of conformity
- You publicaly conform to the behaviour and opinions of the others to be accepted by the group
- But privately you keep your own view or behaviour (when there is no group pressure)
3
Q
What is identification?
A
- This is an intermdiate level of conformity and results in a temporary change in belief
- You take on the behaviour and views of the group both publicaly and privately
- However, when you leave that group, you adopt new behaviours and views
4
Q
What is internalisation?
A
- The deepest level of conformity and results in a permanent change in belief
- You take on the behaviour and views of the group both publically and privately, and when you leave the group these views and behaviours still remain with you
5
Q
What are the two explanations for conformity?
A
ISI - Informative Social Influence (cognitive)
NSI - Normative Social Influence (emotional)
6
Q
What is NSI?
A
- NSI is when you agree with the majority because you want to be accepted and/or do not want to be rejected
- This could lead to compliance where individuals may publically change their behaviour/views but disagree privately
7
Q
What is ISI?
A
- This when you agree with the majority because you may believe they know better, are more likely to be right or because you have the desire to be right
- This could lead to internalisation as the conformity is more likely to be long term where indiviuduals will conform to the beliefs of others both publically and privately
