soap Flashcards
What are soaps
soaps are process withtionn a reaction between potassium, sodium hydroxide with animal or plant fat
formula for soap
fat/oil+ sodium hydroxide = soap+ glycerol
Saponification
saponification i the alkali causes the fats or oils to split imnto fatty acids and glycerine thorugh hydrolis
Hydrophilic end of soap
Hydrophilic end dissolves in water and is attracted to it whereas the second one is the hydrophobic end that is dissolbed in hydrocarbons
what type of soap does sodium and potassium soaps produce
potassium soaps are soft where sodium soaps are hard
Detergents
water soluble cleanising agents which combines with impurities and dirt to make them more soluble,
difference between detergence and sopas when cleaning
doesnt form scum with the salts in the hard water
hardwater
contains minerals like salts and mageniusm
whats important about detergents
chemicals called surfactants
what is surfactant
is a substance that reduce the surface tension of a liqued thereby increasing spreading and wedding proeprties
similarities of soap and detergents
-SOAPS are detergents
differnece between sopa and detergents
Difference is that soap is from natural sources like animal/plant fat and soap is from synthetic derivatives, soaps are enviromentally freindly while detergents are not.
soft water
from surfacem water conatining low concentrations of ions and is low in ions of calcium and magneiusm
hard water
water with high mineral content, fromed when water is filter thorugh deposits of lime stome which contains high calcium and magneisum carbonates
benefits of soap
-soap has good effect like foma is formed, contins sodium ions
