A lifestyle choice, nicotine is an addictive drug found in tobacco products these products carry serious health warning as they have serious effects on health and well-being
Reasons people smoke
Feeling unable to quit, overcome other addictions such as drugs and alcohol, relieve stress/relax, friends smoke (peer pressure), reward themselves, fear of putting on weight (nicotine stops hunger)
Physical effects of smoking
Increases the risk of life-threatening diseases such as cancer, stroke, coronary heart disease.
Intellectual affects of smoking
Cravings, distractions, irritation, stress when smoker is unable to smoke. Depression/anxiety over a period of time
Emotional effects of smoking
Poor self concept (unable to quit) worrying about negative effects on the cost of cigarettes
Social effects of smoking
Feeling socially excluded when having to leave spaces to smoke. People avoiding smokers as they smell of smoke on their hair, clothes and breath
How does smoking when pregnant affect the baby
High rate of having a low weight baby/premature/still born
