Vasoconstriction, increased BP and HR
Effects of nicotine?
Pleasure, improved memory, increased wakefulness, anorexia, decreased anxiety
Name some of the withdrawal effects of nicotine and a way to remember them
Irritability, anxiety, insomnia, increased appetite, etc.
remember they are the opposite of nicotine’s effects
Why do patients increase how much they smoke?
Because they develop a tolerance and need to increase in order to receive the same effects. Leads to addiction
Half life of nicotine?
2 hours
How much nicotine is CONSUMED per cigarette?
1-3 mg. Need to ensure the NRT chosen covers the amount they would normally be having
What characterises high smoking dependence?
More than 30 cigarettes a day and need one within 5 minutes of waking
Goal of NRT?
To reduce withdrawal Sx
How does dose of NRT change?
Titrated down
Benefits of inhaler for NRT?
Mimics the hand - mouth action
Compare the 2 different patch options
16 hr and 24 hr
16 not as good for heavy smokers as there may be withdrawal Sx upon waking
Weird side effect of 24 hour patches?
Vivid dreams / nightmares
Why do women smoke more than men
Estrogen is a fast nicotine metabolised. Need to have more smokes to get same effect
Which NRT products are preferred for use in pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Short acting. Lozenge, oral strips, spray, gum
