Lipid Lowering Drugs Flashcards
Target for total cholesterol?
4 mmol/L
Target LDL levels?
2 mmol/L
or less than 1.8 for CVD patients
Target triglyceride levels?
Below 2 mmol/L
Target HDL levels?
More than 1 mmol/L
Why does not fasting alter LDL levels in a blood test?
Due to the calculation used for LDL. Not fasting increases serum triglycerides which will make the LDL appear lower than it actually is
Is LDL higher in the morning or evening
Evening
How is mixed hyperlipidaemia classified?
Either predominately hypercholesterolaemia or hypertriglyceridaemia
Longest acting statins?
Rosuvastatin and atorvastatin
MOA of statins?
HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. Reduces the hepatic production of cholesterol, resulting in an increase of uptake of LDL plasma cholesterol. Reduces LDL levels
Do statins reduce triglycerides?
Yes but not as much as cholesterol
Most effective dose time for statins?
Evening. Due to daily variation
This is more important for the short acting statins not the long acting ones
Rare ADR of statins?
Rhabdomyolysis
Main enzymes monitored while on statins?
ALT and CK
Which 2 statins are not metabolised by CYP enzymes?
Pravastatin and rosuvastatin
Which drug class does cholestyramine belong to?
Resin
