Smoking And Health Flashcards
Smoking causes 80% of deaths from…
Lung cancer, bronchitis and emphysema in the UK
What does tobacco smoke contain?
Tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide.
What does tar do?
Causes cancer of the lungs, mouth and throat. Coats the surface of breathing tubes and alveoli, causing coughing and damages alveoli, making it hard for gas exchange to happen.
What does smoke do?
Hot smoke damages cilia, which are hairs that move mucus from the lungs. As the cilia is damaged smokers cough mucus up instead which can lead to bronchitis.
What does nicotine do?
Nicotine is an addictive drug that makes cigarettes addictive. It increases heart rate and blood pressure. Makes blood vessels narrower which can cause heart disease.
What does carbon monoxide do?
A gas that replaces the oxygen in red blood cells, reducing the amount on oxygen in the bloodstream. This causes the circulatory system to work harder, causing heart disease.
