What does SMED stand for?

What was SMED originally? What is it more commonly known as now?
A goal created by Toyota to perform every changeover between products in under a minute

What are examples of things done in changeovers?

What are benefits of SMED?
Less equipment downtime
Lower manufacturing costs

What are limitations of SMED?
May need investment for tooling/jigs/fixtures

What are the two activity elements that happen during a changeover? What do they mean?
Internal elements and external elements
Int = things done when process is stopped
Ext = things done when process is still running
What are the four steps of SMED?
1: Identify all steps to be carried out
2: Remove all external elements
3: Convert internal to external
4: Standardise the process
