A material that can change it’s properties
The properties will change due to temperature, light, pH
What is Thermochromic paint?
Changes colour with a change in temperature
What is photochromic paint?
Changes colour with a change in light strength
What are the two ‘shape memory’ smart materials called?
Shape memory ALLOY
Shape memory POLYMER
What is a shape memory alloy?
A mixture of metals which when heated can remain the original shape
What is the metals mixed in a shape memory alloy?
Nickel and titanium called NITINOL
What is so special about shape memory ALLOYS?
Use?
Can be bent into any shape when cold then when heated it goes back to its original shape
E.g. Coffeepot thermostat
What is a shape memory POLYMER?
This is a form of PLASTIC and can retain it’s original shape when heated

If dented it can be heated and regain original shape
