Smarter targets form the basis of the goal setting process
Explain how a coach would use three of these targets when goalsetting with a performer
- specific: emphasis on a specific aspect of performance will remove uncertainty and allow for a clear focus
- measurable: allowing progress to be measured provides motivation and a picture of improvement
- Achievable: goals must be achievable achieving a goal creates a sense of well-being and motivates performers
What are the main positive effects of setting goals in sport?
- Raising motivation level
- Controlling anxiety or stress
Explain the meaning of the acronym smarter in relation to goal setting
- Specific: goals are directly related to a sporting situation and should be clear and concise
- measurable: progress can be measured
- Achievable: by both performer and coach
- Realistic: challenging but within the capability of the performer
- time: date set for completion for both short term and long-term goals
- Evaluate: assessed by the coach and the performer

What are long-term goals?
- The main aim of the athlete, but they don’t provide a pathway for successful achievement of a goal
What are medium term goals?
- They can be used to provide a pathway from short-term goals to the achievement of long-term goals
What are short term goals?
They are concerned with skilled development and give the individual the skills that are required to achieve their long-term goal
What can goals either be?
Outcome orientated or performance orientated
Outcome orientated
- end result of the training program is to win (example)
Performance orientated
- how well the performer did based on previous experiences
What positive effects gives a performer when setting goals
- increases motivation when the goal is accomplished
- Increase confidence levels
- Control arousal/anxiety levels
As a coach, how would you ensure that your goal setting was as effective as possible?
- Goals must be within your reach
- Set goals which are positive rather than negative
