Small animal respiratory parasites Flashcards
What does O.osleri tend to cause in a dog?
Coughing (usually chronic)
A.vasorum is an increasingly common cause of a variety of what clinical signs?
Typically respiratory difficulty and cough, but also signs (often neurological) secondary to the development of a coagulopathy.
Does migration of nematodes cause clinical signs?
Usually migration does not cause clinical signs, unless large burdens.
often see in young puppies
- direct and indirect effects.
See often in young puppies as worms migrate through the lungs. May be difficult to diagnose as signs occur before patent period and so faecal egg counts will be negative.
What is the common Ascarid life cycle?
Pig ingests eggs (infection) -> (No free living stage/L1-L2 in egg) Eggs hatch in intestine (L2) -> Migration to HP vein and liver (L3 develops) -> (symptoms of 'Verminous pneumonia') Migration to heart and lungs (L4 develops) -> Coughed and swallowed (adult develops in intestine) -> Eggs in faeces (detection).
What superfamily are most lungworms from?
Metastronglyoidea
What are some examples of lungworms from the metastrongyloidea family?
Oslerus osleri (Filaroides osleri) - Dog Filaroides spp. - Dog Crenosoma vulpis - Dog Aelustrongylus abstrusus - Cat Angiostrongylus vasorum - Dog
What is an example of a lungworm from the trichuroidae family?
Capilaria aerophila - Dog/Cat
What are the clinical signs of O.osleri?
Pre-patent period: 10-18 weeks.
Nodules (in which worms live) - appear 2 months from infection.
(immune response to adults in trachea and bronchus causes the worm to encapsulate).
Clinical signs - may include chronic cough - often dry rasping cough, particularly after exercise, more notable in young dogs (6-12 months).
What is the best method of diagnosis of O.osleri?
Characteristic nodules (1-1.5cm) can be seen via
