Small animal - anticholenergics Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 2 anticholenergics used in SA?
A
- atropine
- glycopyrrolate
2
Q
atropine IV dose for emergency use
A
0.02-0.04 mg/kg
3
Q
MOA of anticholinergic
A
It inhibits the effects of vagal stimulation, thus increases heart rate.
4
Q
Advantages of atropine
A
- increased heart rate
- reduces salivation and resp secretions
- onset of action = 10-15mins (SQ, IM)
- DOA = 1 hour
5
Q
disadvantages of atropine
A
- tachycardia
- low dose given can exacerbate 2 degree AV block (Tx = more atropine)
- endoscopic exam = can cause spasm of pyloric sphincter of stomach in DOGS
6
Q
advantages of glycopyrrolate
A
- similar to atropine
- DOA 4 hours
- does NOT cross BBB
- less likely to cause tachycardia
7
Q
disadvantages of glycopyrrolate
A
- long DOA
2. avoid SQ route - absorption can be variable and prolonged
