SLT explanations of gender development Flashcards
what did Bandura believe about SLT and gender development?
SLT suggests that children learn their gender roles from influences in their environment - eg . peers, parents, media
- then they observe and imitate it
eg. son sees dad playing football so wants to imitate it
how can new behaviours be learned more quickly?
If the behaviour is reinforced
eg. direct reinforcement, mother praises daughter for painting nails during pampering session
how can children learn through vicarious reinforcement?
- watch whats going on around them and learn what is acceptable or isn’t based on what happens to others
eg. if a boy sees his friend being praised or not crying after falling over , he make think twice before crying in same situation
what is differential reinforcement?
the way in which girl and boys are encouraged to show certain gender-appropriate behaviours.
when does identification occur?
Identification occurs when a child attaches her/himself to a person like them.
- Their role model is usually the same sex, and a child may imitate the behaviour of their role models.
what 4 key cognitive processes is gender behaviour dependent on?
ARMM
Attention - girl watches mum apply make-up.
2. Retention – trying out the skills & memorising the steps.
3. Reproduction – being physically capable of imitating, and
4. The motivation to
want to be like your role model, especially if their behaviour is perceived to be rewarded –e.g. footballer adored by fans on TV, mum complimented on her look
