Q

What are the assumptions of SLT?

A

SLT proposes people learn through observation an imitation (in addition to classical and operant conditioning)
• vicarious reinforcement
• modelling
• mediational processes

Q

What is vicarious reinforcement?

A

VR occurs when a behaviour is seen to be rewarded
• we observe the consequence of a behaviour
• makes us want to imitate the behaviour

Q

What is identification (VF)

A

We choose who we imitate
• similar characteristics
• high status
• parents/ older siblings (children)

Q

What are the mediational processes?

A

• attention - to what extent a behaviour is noticed
• retention - how well a behaviour is remembered
• motor reproduction - ability to reproduce a behaviour
• motivation - the will to carry out the behaviour observed

Q

What is the BoBo doll study?

A

Bandura
• recorded the behaviour of young children who watched an adult behave in either an non/agressive way towards doll
• imitate the behaviour of the adult

Q

strength of SLT?

A

+ recognition of cognitive factors
• more comprehensive account of human learning

Q

Limitations of SLT?

A
  • not enough reference to biology
    • observational learning could be a result of mirror neurons
    • biological factors are underemphasised
  • lab study
    • artificial
    • does not reflect how children learn in everyday life
