Cognitive Approach Flashcards
What are the assumptions of the cognitive approach?
Direct contrast to behaviourist approach.
• internal mental processes should be studied scientifically
• drawing conclusions about what is going on in someone’s mind based on observed behaviour
What are theoretical and computer models?
Theoretical models - diagrams representing the steps involved in internal mental processes eg. working memory model
Computer models - computer simulations of mental processes eg. Imput, process, output
What is a schema
A mental framework of beliefs and expectations that develop with age
• can predict what is going to happen in a situation - lead to incorrect interpretations eg EWT
What is cognitive neuroscience?
Scientific study of the influence of brain structures on mental processes
• combines biological and cognitive psychology to enhance scientific study
• FMRI and PET scans - describe neurological basis of mental processes
What are strengths of the cognitive approach?
+ practical application
• used in the explanation and treatment of depression via identifying and challenging irrational thoughts.
+ scientific
• highly controlled
• lad study’s that produce objective data
What are the limitations of the cognitive approach?
- machine reductionism
• ignored human emotion reduces everything down to a basic computer theory - relies on inference
• lack external validity
