Biologicial Approach Flashcards
What are the assumptions of the biological approach?
Assumes all behaviour has a biological origin
• important to understand all biological structures to fully understand human behaviour
What is the influence of genes on human behaviour
• genotype - genetic makeup
• phenotype - expression of genes
Phenotype is influenced by genetic inheritance and interaction of it with the environment.
Why are twins used in the biological approach?
Twins share 100% or 50% of DNA
• compare concordance rate of MZ (identical twins) and DZ (non-identical)
• eg MZ twins have an increased CR of developing schizophrenia
• MZ twins have a higher concordance rate showing a genetic element into behaviour
What is the influence of evolution on behaviour?
Natural selection ensures that characteristics providing an advantage are passed from one generation to the next.
What is the influence of neurochemicals on behaviour?
Imbalances of neurotransmitters at the synapse such can influence behaviour.
• serotonin - depression
• dopamine - schizophrenia
Evaluation of biological approach?
- biologically determinism
• evolution
• unfalsifiable
+ real world application
• drug therapies - antidepressants
• takes blame off patient as it provides an explanation
