Slimming world is a national, commercial weight loss programme made especially for adults and is the NHS slimming on referral scheme. Members are persuaded to join for 6-12 weeks.

What are the Cons of slimming world?

A
  • Dietary advice is not specific to each individual, a healthy rate loss of 0.5kg or 1/2lbs a week is recommended, however not including the correct nutrients for optimisng healthy weight loss
  • Slimming world is not in some regions of the UK
  • Participants may not gain knowledge on calories and portion sizes once they complete their programme and therefore sutrggle to make healthy choices.

What did (Pallister et al,.2009) find and critique it?

A

Findings showed that the organisation is having a beneficial impact on individuals that were enganging in the programmemes. This is through, members being more likely to increase positive behaviour changes and health improvements the longer they were members. Furthermore, the improvements also reached a family network. However, it could be argued the measurement of questionaire promote dishonesty when collecting results. Only 53% of participants were from slimming and the other 47% could have been relating to another organisation which suggest the findings are unreliable.
