Definition of addiction
Excessive use of a substance
a decline of social and economic function
uncontrollable consumption of the substance
Addictive personality
exhibiting a pattern of compulsive and habitual use of a substance or practice to cope with psychic pain from conflict and anxiety. These people have a low stress tolerance, are dependent, have a negative self-image, depression, and feelings of insecurity
Early stage
more of substance more frequently and has to use a lot more to achieve the same effect.
medical signs-Anxiety, insomnia, cramps, heart palpitations
middle stage
Moderate impairment, user tries to stop or cut back but ends up using more. This stage is when the person must have the drug to feel “normal
Late stage
uses continually to avoid emotional and physical pain and does not feel normal anymore
med signs- liver disease, pancreatitis, toxic psychosis
Alcohol withdrawal syndrome
withdrawal from alcohol can occur as early as 6 hours after cessation of alcohol intake and sometimes last for 3-5 days

Diaphoresis, tremors, hypertension
do NOT be judgmental
Antabuse ( disulfiram) is
a med that will cause alcoholic to be nauseous if they drink alcohol while takin

AA-Alcoholics Anonymous
group for alcoholics that consists of abstinent alcoholics that supports each other through a 12 step program
Detoxification
keep the patient safe from aspiration and seizure At night during detox period use nightlights and remove extra furniture from the room to decrease disorientation at night.
Rehabilitation
This phase focuses on abstaining from drug use
Opioid analgesics
Narcan is antidote - it reverses the effect of opioids
Heroin is an opioid and is very addictive
People with a heroin addiction are given methadone and the protocol is to give it daily until pt is stable then taper eventually to zero
you will always taper a patient off of meds
Stimulants- Amphetamines
an overdose of these like cocaine can cause symptoms that look like Parkinson’s Disease with tremors and shaking
Ecstasy
Both a psychedelic and stimulant- Causes bruxism ( grinding teeth)
give adult pacifier
Hallucinogens
PCP a hallucinogen and causes hallucinations that may last 6-12 hours
Inhalants
-chemicals that alter thinking and mood when inhaled. Glue, lighter fluid, cleaning fluids
Babies born to drug-addicted moms - should be cared for how?
swaddled closely and put in a low stimulation environment
Nurse should get subjective data
drug use like how much, what kind, time of last use, etc.
If you think a coworker is abusing drugs,
report to manager
If found chemically impaird, The impaired nurse can
be in a peer-assistance program and can retain their license and continue to work under supervision
Suspicions a coworker is abusing drugs
Often away form the unit, rapid changes in mood and performance, increased somatic complaints, patients reporting they did not get their medications
