Slide 3 Flashcards
What are cytokines? (A cell mediator)
Cytokines are small proteins that act like messengers in the immune system to help cells communicate.
Are cytokines soluble or solid mediators? Also what do they float around in?
Soluble & they float in plasma
What types of white blood cell produces lymphokines?
Lymphocytes
Which type of cytokine is made by monocytes?
Monokines
What is the role of chemokines?
Chemokines attract immune cells to the site of infection or injury.
How do cytokines send messages to target cells?
By binding to specific receptors on target cells
Do cytokines play a role in innate, adaptive immunity, or both?
Both innate and adaptive immunity
What are the two types of inflammation cytokines can control?
Pro- inflammatory & Anti-inflammatory
What is the purpose of pro-inflammatory cytokines? They does this help fight?
To increase inflammation and help fight infections!
Why are anti-inflammatory cytokines important?
To reduce inflammation, to prevent excessive damage to tissues!
The substance that causes fever is called
Pyrogen
Which part of the brain do pyrogens signal to raise body temp?
Hypothalamus
How does a fever help the immune system?
It slows down pathogens and boosts immune activity
Can pyrogens come from both inside and outside the body?
Yes
What is the overall job of cytokines in the immune system?
To regulate when to start, strengthen, or calm down an immune response
