SLEEP LECTURE Flashcards
1
Q
Why is REM sleep paradoxical?
A
Because the EEG is desynchronized meaning an active brain, but simultaneously a paralyzed body.
2
Q
What is the role of the subchiasmatic (SCN) nucleus in sleep?
A
Determines preferred sleep times by modulating melatonin excretion.
3
Q
What three factors regulate sleep?
A
- SCN –> Melatonin
- Homeostatic factors –> Build up sleep pressure
- Environmental factors –> cafeine, social cues, light.
4
Q
What are the main functions of sleep?
A
- Evolutionary theory
- Growth and restore functions
- Off-line information processing
5
Q
In what phase does a k-complex occur?
A
In phase 2.
6
Q
What characterizes Non-REM sleep stage 2?
A
Sleep spingles, these are periodic bursts of activity at about 10-12 Hz that last about 1-2 seconds. Arise as a result of interactions between thalamic and cortical neurons.
